Fingerprint Legislation for Teachers
May 5, 2014
This is a reminder that all employees hired AFTER July 1, 2013 MUST get fingerprinted by June 30, 2014. DO NOT IGNORE this important task!
We will work on contract language during our negotiations next year to see if we can get contract language to get the fees reimbursed. For now, teachers must pay $55 and secretaries and clerks $35.
It's a busy time of year, but make sure this is at the top of your "to do" list.
Teachers hired before 7/1/13 will be phased in over the next few years. More to come on future deadlines down the road.

What: DESE voted on Sept. 24, 2013 to adopt regulations regarding "An Act Relative to Background Checks". The law requires all public and private K-12 school employees to submit to fingerprint-based national and state criminal background checks. All school-related personnel with the potential for direct and unmonitored contact with children must submit to fingerprint background checks.
When: School employees who began service prior to July 1, 2013 shall submit fingerprints before the start of the 2016-2017 school year, on a phased in basis and according to a schedule that will be developed by DESE.
Who: Individuals who began their service on or after July 1, 2013, must submit their fingerprints once the system is established during the 2013-2014 school year. Stay tuned for more information on dates and locations as it becomes available.
Cost: $55 teachers/$35 employees who do not need a teaching certification (bus drivers, etc..)
Who Pays: Individuals are responsible, but this can be bargained locally (Yup, it's already on the list!)
